India Travel Guide – Your Ultimate Resource for Exploring India

Looking for the best travel guide in India? You just found it.

India is a kaleidoscope of flavours, colours, scents, cultures, and landscapes that will stir your senses and leave you in awe. It is an ancient civilisation of over a billion people with a documented history dating back to 8000 BC.

It is the only one still surviving, thriving, and preserving its roots despite the onslaught of invasions and colonisation. Yet, it is the fastest-growing economy undergoing a massive transformation

1. Introduction: Why India is a Must-Visit Destination

You need multiple visits to experience India fully. From the cold desert of Ladakh and its predominantly Buddhist culture to the flavours and hues of Rajasthan and the dense forests of central India, home to majestic tigers and vibrant festivals, India will never fail to amuse you. The North East (7 sister states) is one of the lesser-known yet stunning destinations, provided you venture beyond the usual tourist spots and opt to experience the life of indigenous communities, vibrant textiles, and herb-infused cuisine.

Talking about the cuisine, I want to bust a myth. It’s a common belief that Indian food is spicy and heavy on the body. On the contrary, I would categorise Indian food as flavourful instead of spicy. As long as you stick to authentic homemade food, you will be surprised how fast you fall in love with it.

Why should you go for a custom tour of India?

Given the size and scale of the country, you require some research and hand-holding to experience India beyond the tourist points. This is where an India Travel Guide (or India travel blog) and The Folk Tales can help you. However, whether you are visiting India for the first time or are a seasoned traveller, this India Travel Guide will provide valuable insights and inspiration to make your trip safe, sustainable, and meaningful.

2. Why am I qualified to write a travel guide to India?

Gaurav Bhan Bhatnagar, founder of The Folk Tales, passionate about authentic Indian experiences

I have travelled the length and breadth of India since 2011, primarily by road, and lived with the indigenous communities for an extended duration to experience their ways of life. Over time, I have developed immense respect and awe for India’s diversity and the warm hospitality that is an integral part of our culture.

I hold a degree in computer science and grew up in a typical university and corporate cocoon. When I eventually began exploring India, my passion for it grew leaps and bounds. In spite of a comfortable job, I could not visualise doing it for the rest of my life. This inspired me to resign in 2013 and dive into creating meaningful and sustainable travel experiences for you.

In 2014, I started The Folk Tales (incorporated as Folktales Journeys OPC Pvt Ltd in 2013) to offer custom-designed experiences in India, all of which are crafted based on our years of expertise and experience travelling in India. Each tour is uniquely designed to suit your areas of interest, the number of days, and the budget.

Over the years, we have been honoured with numerous recognitions and awards, including the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award for outstanding cultural immersion.

Through my blogs, I hope you touch, move, and inspire you to visit my country. I wish to dispel the false narratives and provide a true and accurate picture of India with you.

3. India Travel Guide: Understanding India’s Cultural Diversity

Celebration of India’s diverse cultural traditions and attire

India’s beauty lies in its diverse landscapes, cultures, cuisines, and languages. Each of the 28 states and eight union territories offers distinct cultural, historical, and geographical characteristics. No two experiences in India are alike, which is why I recommend customising a tour according to your preferences.

Whether you are trekking in the Himalayas, walking through the bustling streets of Delhi or Jaipur, or relaxing by the beaches of Kerala, the variety of experiences will require several trips to India. However, be prepared for the unexpected, as India will amaze you with its contrasts.

4. Best Time to Visit India for Tourists: Weather and Tips

From the frigid Himalayas of Ladakh to the deserts of Rajasthan and from the dense jungles of central India to the sunny beaches of Kerala, the weather can vary significantly. I suggest timing your tour and destinations according to these weather patterns –

Winter (October to March)

This season is ideal for visiting most of the country, particularly the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, you may also take leisurely safaris in Central India or visit the South of India. For the desert of Rajasthan and jungle safaris of Madhya Pradesh, you may need extra clothing because the days are hot, while the nights are cold.

For example, if you are visiting the Himalayas, check that the hotels offer room heaters or electric blankets. You should not expect them to have double-pane glass windows or thermostat-controlled heating. It simply does not exist in most Indian buildings. For more on travel safety in colder climates, visit the official tourism guidelines by the Indian Ministry.

Summer (April to June)

This season is ideal for the Himalayas, as the Gangetic plains experience sweltering heat. You may consider spending a few weeks in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Combining a trip to North India with Nepal is a great idea. While it is summer in the rest of India, the northeast, including Sikkim, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam, experiences the monsoon season.

Monsoon (June to September)

While the rains bring lush landscapes, some areas may become less accessible. This season is perfect for visiting Ladakh, the stunning Himalayan desert. On one hand, the mornings are nice and sunny, the evenings have a nip in the air, making them perfect for sipping a cup of hot chocolate or chai on your homestay balcony.

Shoulder Season

August and April are shoulder seasons for the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan, when the heat is lower than peak summer. If you prefer fewer tourists and are comfortable handling a bit of heat, you may consider these months. October is the shoulder season for the Himalayas, including Ladakh and Spiti. Lastly, for shoulder season travel advice, check this government portal for India travel information.

Visit the Indian Meteorological Department for current weather updates or download a weather app while you travel.

5. Best Travel Destinations to Explore in India

India is home to numerous unique and fascinating places, each offering its distinct charm and appeal. It would not be unfair to say that the dialect, cuisine, festivals, and dresses change after every few

Rajasthan: Land of Royalty and Stunning Countryside

Rajasthan offers travellers a royal experience with its majestic forts, palaces, and the Thar desert. Visit the pink city of Jaipur for its Amber fort and City Palace, but go beyond to witness how artisans work in the city’s bylanes, the block printers, and the charming eateries on a food tour. For a truly immersive experience of Rajasthan, let The Folk Tales India design a custom tour with a private tour guide who can uncover the region’s hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path wonders.

Take a trip through the blue streets of Jodhpur or stay with a weaver family in rural Rajasthan. I highly recommend going off the beaten path and adding places such as Bundi, Ghanerao, Chanoud, and Mandawa on a custom Rajasthan tour. Experiences such as visiting nomadic herders, prehistoric rock paintings, and village walks enhance your experience and contribute directly to the local economy. You can easily combine a tour of Rajasthan with Agra and Varanasi.

Recommended duration: 2–3 weeks.

Varanasi: Spiritual Awakening

Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest cities, with an unbroken link to Indic civilisation. Whether you have a strong spiritual inclination or are visiting simply as a tourist, there is something for everyone. Witness the mesmerising ceremony (Aarti) on the ghats of the Ganges, go offbeat on a temple tour that gives you a sneak peek into the narrow streets of the Assi colony, and immerse yourself in the deep cultural traditions of this sacred city.

To fully understand the spiritual significance and hidden stories of Varanasi, hiring a Varanasi tour guide will enrich your experience. A local guide can offer insights into the city’s history, take you to lesser-known temples, and guide you through the rituals and customs of this ancient city.

Be prepared for the chaos and noise of Varanasi city, which may feel overwhelming in the beginning. But, as you spend more time, you notice how amusing it is the way things function. I suggest spending at least three nights, as the city takes time to grow on you.

Recommended duration: 3+ days.

North East India: Where is that?

The northeast of India is a hidden gem, offering pristine landscapes, rich tribal cultures, a unique cuisine with a blend of herbs, and splendid textiles. This region comprises seven states, collectively known as the Seven Sisters, which include Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland. Sikkim has joined the family and has come to be known as the eighth sister.

For nature lovers and hikers, this is a great time to visit Meghalaya. However, wildlife enthusiasts should avoid the monsoon season as the wildlife parks are shut. Kaziranga and Manas National Parks are open between October and April. You may want to combine a visit here with a trip to Arunachal Pradesh or Meghalaya.

This region has a range of indigenous festivals that you can experience on a custom tour of North East India. The Shad Suk Mynsiem festival of the Khasi tribal community in Meghalaya happens in April to celebrate the fresh harvest. Consider combining it with a tribal and textile experience, as well as a safari in Assam.

Recommended duration: 2-3 weeks.

Exploring Ladakh: Land of High Passes and Stunning Monasteries

Ladakh, with its rugged terrain and stunning monasteries, is a dream destination for adventure seekers. Whether you are exploring the serene Pangong Lake or driving through the high-altitude passes, Ladakh offers a unique blend of adventure and spirituality. A private tour guide in India can help you explore the hidden corners of Ladakh, from remote monasteries to breathtaking landscapes. Consider a 2 to 3-week custom Ladakh tour that encompasses Buddhist culture, the Changpa and Brokpa communities, and the stunning high-altitude lakes.

Recommended duration: 2-3 weeks.

The Golden Triangle: Go-to Circuit for First-Time Visitors

Delhi is a blend of ancient and modern India. From the historic Red Fort and Jama Masjid to the bustling streets of Connaught Place, Delhi has something for every traveller. For a moment of peace, visit the serene Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, where you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere away from the city’s noise. But you do not have to do a run-of-the-mill tour. The Golden Triangle tour of India can be customised with immersive food, textile, handicraft, and wildlife experiences in a shorter duration.

Recommended duration: 7-10 days.

Women’s Safety Tips – India Travel Guide for Solo Female Travelers

Safety is the top priority for solo women travellers in India or any other country in the world. India is generally safe for tourists, but it is essential to be mindful of local customs. Travelling with a trusted female tour guide can ensure comfort and security, especially for solo women travellers. The Folk Tales India Travel Guide will offer you crucial insights into the safest regions and tips on how to stay secure.

The negative global media attention India has gathered has not helped tourism in our country. Some of the dreadful crimes that have happened in the past have created a negative perception about safety in general. From our decade-long experience, if you take basic precautions, you should be just fine travelling solo in India.

One of my top recommendations is to be friendly, but not with everyone. Use your gut feeling. If it does not feel right, it probably isn’t. Do not feel bad about being rude and saying ‘no’ to a person you do not want to communicate with.

I urge you to travel with an open heart because you will find exceptional gestures of kindness as you interact with the locals. A detailed India Travel Guide can help you make informed decisions about which areas to visit and avoid.

How to Get Around: India Travel Guide for Tourists

Navigating India’s transport system can be challenging. But with a rapidly evolving rail system, an increasing number of domestic airports, and state-of-the-art expressways, the journey is becoming easy. If you are a solo traveller in India on a low budget, consider using the public transport system, including trains and low-cost domestic flights.

Opting for train journeys lets you travel sustainability. We recommend domestic flights only when the travel distance is 1000 km or above. When you choose to take a domestic flight, try this direct booking platform that lets you compare the carriers and choose the best option. A custom tour with The Folk Tales India helps you plan routes and best modes of transportation according to your budget and time.

If you are travelling as a couple, family, or are above 60, I recommend private transport for convenience and comfort. After the railways, a full-time private vehicle is the most sustainable travel option. All high-quality vehicles comply with the recent emission norms, with adequately trained drivers to ensure vehicle maintenance, safety, and lower emissions.

Do I need a visa to travel to India?

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) controls the visa grants, denials, and exemptions for foreign tourists. Except for the citizens of Nepal and Bhutan, all other nationalities require a tourist visa for India. The visa policies are updated regularly, and we recommend visiting the MEA visa policy for the latest details.

  • India tourist visa validity: The short-stay e-visa for tourists is valid up to 60 days. Tourists can stay up to 180 days in India with a visa extension from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
  • India tourist visa cost: India offers an e-visa for tourists, the cost of which ranges between $10 and $25 per person for a single entry. Visit the Indian Consulate General’s office in your city, or check the updated costs on the website.

Do I need vaccinations to visit India?

Vaccines depend on the guidelines of the country you reside in and the status of your health. India does not mandate any vaccine to visit as a tourist. To give you a general idea, the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following vaccines and health guidelines for tourists to India.

What to Eat in India: A Food Lover’s Guide to Indian Cuisine

India has a vast culinary diversity. What you may taste in Delhi would be completely different from the local food of Kerala. But one thing is common – everything is super flavourful. And flavourful is not the same as ‘hot and spicy’. In our day-to-day life, we consume simple spices and a moderate amount of oil and butter. As a Westerner, you get the impression from what you eat in a restaurant. I highly recommend staying in family-run properties and opting for local food while designing a custom tour of India.

If you are accustomed to bland food, you may need a few days to adjust to the flavours. To start with, you can take one Indian meal a day, followed by a western meal such as toast, eggs, porridge, cereal, and fruit. That will give your body a balance till the time you are ready to fully switch to Indian food. For more culinary tips, refer to The Folk Tales India Travel Guide, which can help you find the best local food spots based on your taste preferences.

If you are visiting the North of India, some of the everyday items you would find in a restaurant are palak paneer (spinach sauce with cottage cheese), chicken curry, dry vegetable curries, and lentils. You can combine them with plain or jeera rice (rice with cumin), or chapati (Indian flat bread).

A custom tour of India gives you the flexibility to choose the kind of experiences you want, whether it’s countryside, homestays, food, textiles, or artisanal crafts. You can even design a thematic tour around your interests. Some of the options include:
